When I was 6 my grandfather (who ran a pharmacy) gave me a (what’s the collective noun for watches? A tick?) of watches and told me that if I sold them to kids at school, I could keep the profit. That was the beginning of my career as an entrepreneur.

I always knew I wanted to run my own business; I had a passion for problem solving, a leaning towards niche and the confidence to back myself.

I was fortunate enough to be at uni when the internet was just starting to sprout widely in homes and businesses. Consumer patterns were shifting like tides and the way goods were purchased was evolving.

My parents were both self employed. Dad was an Electrician and Mum managed his business. One day I watched as Mum rushed to an electrical wholesaler to pick up materials for Dad before they shut at 3pm. It just didn’t make any sense – if tradies are paid by the hour (usually from 6am to 3pm) and wholesalers have the same opening hours, how could either supplier or consumer be benefitting from the lack of flexibility?

I drew a correlation between my observations and the way the online economy was shifting and realised it could be applied across any industry. In essence, I had discovered a fast growing, untouched niche dominated by middle-aged men who thought change was a dirty word.

In a period of 10 years I took the business from a garage-based operation to one of Australia’s fastest growing companies. My iconoclastic thinking combined with a social leaning gave a typically male-dominated industry a good run for its money.
